The prevailing mindset seems to thinking inside the box equals job security.
I find it amazing how many think improving Muskoka's economy can be done by attracting more industry, big box stores and 'development'.
The economy of Muskoka is based on three things, trees, rocks and water. Mess them up much more and there won't be an economy.
As for the philosophy of more, I suggest reading Jeff Rubin's book, The End of Growth. Available at the Bracebridge library.
The current combination of outmoded economic theories and inaction will one day enable us to prove Joni Mitchell correct.
"We paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
Try not to let it happen.

Amusing and well-written. I hope it isn't so amusing that people chuckle instead of rising from their usual crouching position to stand tall and demand extreme change. Remember the font-line, spearhead heroes of the world wars. Time after time Canadian troops were chosen because the didn't run and because the fascists truly feared them. We have would-be fascists in the Harper Government. They spit on the values those gutsy Canadians fought and frequently died for.
Did we lose fathers and grandfathers and uncles in the great wars so that greedy oil patchers
could corrupt our democratic values and trash the natural environment?
Not where I come from Clement, Harper, and company.
It is time for you bought-by-the-oil-patch villians to GO.

I suggest “watchers” should go easy on District Council -at this time. It took much work on the part of many people to get Council to accept the need for an Airport Advisory Committee. At this point the members have experienced only one meeting and are getting to know and understand one another…and formulating the “methods of engagement”. A “right and correct” thing has happened and I certainly will not be quick to condemn.
The District Chairperson has been doing a good job under difficult circumstances. He was elected by the Councillors –but just barely. He is dealing with long established opinion, possibly vested interests, and long entrenched ways of doing district “business”. Change is coming and he is a good leader and has implemented some interesting initiatives.
With the airport there is severe need for broader and deeper experience in aviation matters – hence the Airport Advisory Committee. Larry Braid as Chairperson is the best choice for that position too. He is the only official with flying experience, and probably understands the challenges facing staff and politicians. I suspect he will shine in this position.
Understandably the civil servants are under pressure with their credibility under question. This is pretty hard for anyone to accept.
Concerning the environmental issues, it seems the questions raised sought more imaginative solutions that would still meet the requirements spelled out in middle of the Environmental Study. There is more depth to the recommendations than is apparent.
With this starter we might well be surprised with the developments.
Councillors and staff will have to bring themselves "up to speed" on many matters.
It is extremely important that everyone understand that we are all in this together. It is all about proper airport planning for a better future, not simply grasping low hanging fruit at the expense of future growth or the environment. The people who lobbied for the Airport Advisory Committee are definitely not an anti-development group.

Change starts with a ripple…but it does spread.

Canuckal? What is the derivation of this mythical country's name? I am trying to think of some other banana republics. Let's see... Canadistan?, How about Chinada? No, here's a better one - Canputinland?
Of course! Let's not forget Canamerica - home of the hanging chad.

What the hell! Let's all just emigrate to Cancubanada. It's not so different there, - except for the comprehensive social services and yes - this time of year, it's warmer.

Well written!
It is right that snowmobiles can be real polluters, both noise and air pollution. They emit harmful gases that is not good for the environment and the noise is in itself very annoying.
But apart from all this they are very exciting to ride.
